The U.S. Radio Act declared public ownership of the airwaves. Charles A. Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic. On the radio, the Duke Ellington Orchestra was heard direct from the Cotton Club. Grandma Moses began painting full-time. The new Palmer House (the third one) was built in Chicago. MacLeod Manufacturing Co. of Chicago made a new electric "household beater" for the Dormeyer Co. which became popular when Chicago Flexible Shaft (later Sunbeam) produced the Mixmaster. Leonard Japp founded a snack-foods distributor on Chicago's South Side and made potato chips under the name Mrs. Japp's Potato Chips but after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the name changed to Jays Potato Chips. Chicago's Buckingham Fountain was dedicated on August 26; the opening of the fountain featured John Philip Sousa and his marching band playing "Stars and Stripes Forever" when the fountain's jets and lights first were turned on. Bungalows were the answer to the need for affordable single-family housing, and more than 100,000 were built in the Chicago area, with the average bungalow selling for about $8,000 for living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms and one bath on a typical 25-foot-wide by 125-foot-deep city lot. The Concordia Historical Institute was incorporated by interested individuals in the Synod to provide for the preservation of its records.

The whole inside of Bethlehem's parsonage was remodeled and paid for by ads displayed on the curtain in school, ads gathered by Pastor Luecke. The congregation gave funds to support Loop Lenten services and authorized recruitment of individual contributions. Congregation gave $100. to Evanston Hospital. Old hymnbooks were sold to the Sunday School for 30 cents and 125 new books purchased. A new constitution was adopted. The Mission Festival had combined English and German service this year because German service was so poorly attended the last few years. The new constitution was amended "The services shall be conducted in both German and English language as the congregation may direct." Miss Gladys Gross replaced Mrs. Kasten as teacher. Miss Cordelia Ferber was added as teacher. The church anniversary was celebrated November 20 with a printed program. The Ladies Sewing Society celebrated its 15 year anniversary. "Resolved to enclose the front porch and fix up a room in the basement of the church to accommodate those [English-speaking people] who have to wait for the next service [when the German service runs long]."

1928. The teletype machine was first used. In Schenectady, N.Y., the first scheduled television broadcasts were produced in New York. Steamboat Willie introduced Mickey Mouse. A motion picture was shown in color. Times Square got moving headlines in electric lights. IBM adopted the 80-column punched card. Kraft introduced Velveeta Cheese. Palm Beach suits could be purchased for $15. and five-day Great Lakes cruises for $44. Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s mail-order build-it-yourself kits provided all materials for a five-room house--with the exception of cement, brick and plaster--for only $1,982, while a seven-room kit was $2,395. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Bethlehem resolved to allow $150. a year to advertise services in the local papers, $10. a month to advertise Loop Lenten services. $50. per month for ten months for kindergarten teacher salary, and $5. per sermon for guest preachers. A joint English and German service was held on Palm Sunday. A bulletin board was purchased for the narthex of the church. Ascension Day services discontinued due to poor attendance. A card was sent to all members asking them whether they favor a new church building and what they would contribute toward it. A building fund was started with $10,535. in pledges. The Men's Club had experience night. The church anniversary on November 18 was celebrated again with German and English services and a lecture at night in the school hall, with dinner and supper served. A committee was established to decide whether to let the English District start an English mission in central Evanston or whether Bethlehem should do it.

1929. Herbert Hoover became President. The Depression began as brokers watched stock prices on an automated electric board. Some cars came with radios. In Germany, magnetic sound recordings were made on plastic tape. The 3,500-seat, Art Deco-style Civic Opera House, built by Samuel Insull, becomes the new home of the Chicago Civic Opera. A television studio was built in London. The Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church of America was organized. In Evanston, the Emerson Street Second Baptist Church was organized. At Bethlehem, there are not enough elders for the English services. A committee recommended discontinuing English service at Bethlehem and holding English services at the Varsity Theater. The recommendation was rejected. The English District was told to start whatever mission they desire. Joint English and German services were held on Palm Sunday, with confirmation in the afternoon. More hymnals were purchased. A canvass of Evanston was undertaken. The Anniversary celebration had German and English services in the morning, semi-religious entertainment in the evening, with dinner and supper served as usual. Miss Irma Labahn (Hahn) added as teacher. Bethlehem had 356 families, 1453 souls, 992 communicants, 157 voting members, 187 school children, 137 Sunday school children. Receipts were-$18,511.32; disbursements-$17,471.02.

Lowell Thomas began the first regular network newscast. The first supermarket opened. Planet Pluto was discovered. The name of Constantinople was changed to Istanbul. Lutheran Hour radio broadcasts were begun. The American Lutheran Church was formed in 1930, merging the Joint Synod of Ohio (1818), Buffalo Synod (1845), and Texas (1851) and Iowa Synods (1854); it became part of the 1960 merger resulting in the second American Lutheran Church. The American Lutheran Conference also organized as a cooperative body of five Midwestern synods. Searching for a way to sell year-round the cake fingers used in seasonal strawberry shortcakes, John Dewar, manager of Continental Baking Co. in Chicago, devised a banana-flavored cream filling for them and names them "Twinkies," changing the filling during World War II to vanilla because of a shortage of bananas. Continental also introduced Wonder Bread to the national market in 1930. Evanston's population was 63,338 people. Pledges for Bethlehem's new church totalled $40,000. School children had a service for 400th year since the signing of the Augsburg Confession. Sunday School as well as Day School had Christmas programs, and it was decided to alternate their programs between church and school each year. Baskets of food were distributed to the needy of the church at Thanksgiving and Christmas time by Walther Leaguers.

1931. Commercial teletype service began. The Empire State Building in New York City was completed. Bethlehem's Men's Club organized an Athletic Association for the youth of the congregation. The congregation received a gift of $2800 out of the estate of Mr. Kreitzer. At the September 17 voters' meeting, an accusation was made by Mr. Bull against Pastor Luecke but it was resolved that this matter be settled privately with a few witnesses and if this couldn't be done to bring it up before the church council. At the October 5 meeting, a letter from Peter Cords and August Thiel was read asking Mr. Bull to take back his accusation but he refused to do so. Mr. Altehage wished to say certain things but Pastor Luecke protested. Mr. Arnoux moved that these two gentlemen should bring the matter before the church council. At the November meeting Pastor Luecke reported that the elders had asked him to drop all outside business such as the summer camp he was trying to start and stated that he would be glad to do that but asked the elders for a little time because he didn't think it was fair to drop his partners at once. He asked the congregation not to believe the slander against him. As it appeared impossible to find a cook for the anniversary dinner, it was decided to drop the meals this year. It was later reported that the Ladies' Aid provided dinner and supper for anniversary celebration.
